A civil society organization known as Relief International Africa has opened a Human Rights Clinic, in order to promote and protect the rights of people across the country.
Speaking during the human rights clinic launch, the executive director of Relief International Africa, Green Isaac, said the Nigerian society has been a victim of human rights abuse and violation since the colonial times.
According to him, the clinic will be a safe space for individuals to access legal advice, seek redress for human rights violation, noting that it will also address various challenges faced by the Nigerian people across the continent ranging from poverty, inequality, discrimination, violence amongst others.
Isaac said that everyone deserves to live a life free from fear, oppression, and injustice”.
“Nigeria has witnessed numerous human rights abuses throughout its history. Some key incidents stared during the Colonial Rule between late 19th century down to 1960. During British colonial rule, Nigerians suffered various human rights abuses, including forced labor, land seizures, and harsh treatment by colonial authorities. These incidents have continued unabated even in the return to democracy.
“This clinic represents a new chapter in our organization’s commitment to promoting and protecting human rights. It is a testament to our unwavering belief that every individual, regardless of their background or circumstances, deserves to live a life of dignity and respect.
“We have gathered here today because we recognize the immense challenges faced by millions of people across this continent. Poverty, inequality, discrimination, and violence continue to plague communities, depriving individuals of their fundamental rights.
“But we also recognize that amidst these challenges lie opportunities for change and progress. The launch of this Human Rights Clinic is a concrete step toward addressing these challenges and seizing those opportunities. It is a platform for education, advocacy, and empowerment.
“It will provide a safe space for individuals to access legal advice, seek redress for human rights violations, and engage in dialogue and training on human rights issues. Through this clinic, we aim to both address immediate needs and contribute to systemic change.
“We will work tirelessly to support marginalized communities, amplify their voices, and foster an environment where human rights are not just protected on paper, but realized in practice.
“None of this would be possible without the dedication, expertise, and passion of so many individuals and organizations who have joined forces to make this clinic a reality. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you, your support and commitment are invaluable, and I firmly believe that together, we can make a lasting impact in the lives of countless individuals.
“Today marks the beginning of a journey, one that will undoubtedly be filled with challenges and obstacles, but I have unwavering faith in the resilience and determination of the human rights community. I have seen the transformative power of legal advocacy and activism, and I have seen first hand the impact it can have on individuals and communities.
“As we launch this Human Rights Clinic, let us remember that the work we do here today is not just about numbers and statistics. It is about real people, with real lives, and real dreams.
“It is about recognizing their humanity and ensuring that they can live their lives free from fear, oppression, and injustice”.
He disclosed that the proposed project activities for the human rights clinic is centered on; advocacy and awareness across communities, provide legal aid services, domestic violence support, alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and early warning system.
