Prosecute Any Lawmaker Involved in Crime ~ Akwa Ibom Speaker

Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Barrister Onofiok Luke has asked the state commissioner of Police, CP Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi not to spare anyone, including himself and his colleagues, who is found involved in any criminal activity.

The speaker stated this while receiving the Police commissioner during a visit to the State House of Assembly.

Luke also commended the efforts of the force so far in the state especially the Complaint Unit in their prompt response to issues that bother Akwa Ibom people, adding that it goes a long way in building the people’s confidence in the Police Force.

“I want to thank the Complaint Unit of the force for their prompt response to issues that bother Akwa Ibom people and it helps build the confidence of the people to actually say and believe that police is their friend,” he said.

The speaker also highlighted the readiness of the House of Assembly to work on areas which the Commissioner has challenges such as the Anti-Cultism Law and the Eternal Security and Enforcement Law of the state pointing out that the commissioner’s input will be needed during the process since the Police are at the helm of implementing the law in the state.

Luke further thanked the commissioner for following the footsteps of his predecessors in ensuring effective policing in the state especially by engaging the youths in a parley which helped in giving them an opportunity to share their challenges with the Police and how they can partner with them to find solutions to these challenges.

“One area I must commend you is that conference you had with the youths of the state which gave them an opportunity to share their challenges with you and how to proffer solutions to them I must say it was a job well done,” he added.

Luke also pointed out the reforms made by the House in the dispensation of criminal justice in the state through the passage of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law 2017 which has been signed by the governor stating that it will help in checking the activities of criminals in the state

The speaker also reiterated the readiness of the state House of Assembly to support the force in the state in terms of cooperation and assistance, in its course of making the environs of the state crime free and safe.

Earlier, the Police commissioner, CP Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi said he was in the Assembly to seek closer collaboration and support of the legislature to enable the police command achieve maximum result in the combating of crime in the state.

Briefing the lawmakers on some of the strides recoded by the police in the war against cultism and violent crimes in the state, the Police boss disclosed that the command has recently arrested over sixty cult members out of which seventeen have been charged to court while others are undergoing investigation.

He further hinted two police officers have been dismissed from the command for their involvement in cultism, adding that they are currently undergoing prosecution.
