Over three hundred persons from Elekahia Community in Port Harcourt City local government area of Rivers State on Saturday benefited from a free medical outreach and distribution of hunger relief items by the Region 10, District 404 A2, of the Lions Club International in Rivers State.
The Region 10 District 404 A2 of the Lions Club is made up of five clubs; Port Harcourt New Garden City Lions Club, Port Harcourt Golden Lions Club, Port Harcourt Platinum Lions Club, Port Harcourt Treasure Base Lions Club and Port Harcourt Omega Lions Club.
The group as part of it’s way of reaching out to the needy and giving back to the society carried out free medical health check (tested for high blood pressure, diabetes, sugar levels, and body max index among others) and distributed food items such as; rice, noodles and breads to the less privileged (both adults and children) in the community.
Chairman, Region 10 District 404 A2, of the Lions Club International, Lion Dr. Prince Nwosa, said the gesture was the organisation’s little way of alleviating the suffering faced by the people and promoting their overall health and well-being.
“Today, we are doing free health check and distribution of hunger relief materials to the people. It is part of our little way to ameliorate or cushion the effect of hunger in the society.
“We bring a message of hope, we are encouraging people by this gesture to have hope especially in this moment of our economy. There is always somebody that cares for you and would want to help you. Regardless of what the government is doing, we are here to also support the government and the community development wise, and many more.
Nwosa said; “Lions International is an association of lions clubs in the world. Its an old association, founded in 1917 in Chicago by the largest service organisation in the world. We have a mantra that wherever there is a need, there is a lion. One of our priorities is to meet people that are in need.
“Every year, we embark on projects such as hunger and disaster relief, diabetes awareness, among others. Wherever there is a problem, we try to be there to help the needy. That’s what we do in every country of the world.”
A stakeholder in the community and landlord, Mr. Columbus Nwabeke commended the organisation for the medical outreach and food items distribution in the community.
He noted that there is hungry in the land, and urged the government to as a way of addressing high cost of living, hunger and other burning issues that gave rise to the 10 days nationwide protest by aggrieved Nigerians, go back to the drawing board and put measures in place to cushion the sufferings of the people.
One of the beneficiaries thanked the Lions Club for the gesture, especially the free medical tests, noting that it has given her a huge relief.
