Onne Customs Tightens Noose on Illegal Documentation, Increases Revenue

The Onne Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intensified efforts at ensuring that goods cleared at the port undergo proper documentation procedures.

This is in tandem with the warning given by the Area Controller, Galadimma Saidu, to officers and men of the command as he assumed duty months ago.

Reiterating this recently, Saidu stressed that the command will not tolerate lawlessness and illegality but will ensure that Federal Government laws on import documentation are carried out to the letter at the command.

The command’s monthly revenue profile is presently moving up “in geometric projection” in line with her target, giving credence to the statement that the area is in tune with the Comptroller General of Customs’ three point agenda, which anchors on high revenue generation, transparency and welfare of the officers and men of the Nigeria Customs Service.

According to our sources, increased efforts by the officers and men of the Federal Ocean Terminal (FOT) gate Onne Customs Command, under the leadership of DC Audu, at implementing the laws in order to ensure that goods passing the gate are well documented and normal duty paid to the Federal Government, have attracted “hatred and threats to these officers as some agents/touts are at moment trying to smear them for not compromising.”

Our reporter gathered that the Customs officers at the FOT gate, Onne, have noticeably increased their efforts in keeping with the norms of international documentation of goods at the exit gate, thereby attracting more revenue to the Federal Government.

At the moment imported goods are undergoing physical examination at the port before final exit at the FOT gate, our source said, noting that this is not going down well with the said agents/touts operating at the area “who are not finding it easy cutting comers.”

Meanwhile some members of a pressure group operating at the Onne Port, led by Chief Jerry Obichere under the aegis of Transparency group of Customs Licensed Agents, while commending the Onne Customs for keeping with the rules of engagement in international documentation procedures at the port advised importers and agents operating at the port to see reason with the Customs at the command and do the needful.
