Renowned industrialist and philanthropist, Chief (Engr.) Grant Offor, has awarded scholarships to some indigent students of Ikwerre extraction, to assist them complete their academic session at the Nigerian Law School.
This is as the industrialist, who had instituted an annual scholarship award to indigent students studying other courses, aside from Law, has also announced the names of successful students for this year’s academic session.
Chief Offor made this known while speaking with newsmen in his office in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
The managing director/chief executive officer (MD/CEO) of Ramec Group of Companies Ltd, said he decided to set up an “independent panel of reputable men and women of outstanding integrity, who worked out the modality for screening and examining the awardees, in conjunction with Grant Offor’s Foundation, to short-list the names of Law students from Ikwerre Local Government Area, qualified for the scholarship award.
“The independent panel single-handedly set up the criteria for selection, and no member of my family, including myself, influenced the selection process. The process used was very transparent, fair and credible; hence no qualified student was short-changed nor cheated in the selection process,” he said.
Chief Offor said he decided to give the scholarship to some indigent students from various communities in Ikwerre Local Government Area “to enable them successfully finish their Law School programme.
“I feel happy and fulfilled as a person helping people around to achieve their destiny in life. At least with the scholarship, after their Bar finals examination and being able to pass successfully, they come out as lawyers and also contribute their quota to the betterment of humanity and the society,” he said.
Our correspondent reports that beneficiaries of the Grant Offor Foundation’s scholarship award include Okachi Dike Chukwuka, Ndah Lawrene Okwudiri, Amadi Rowland Chinedu, Igwe Blessing Chikaike, Ogundu Glory Friday, Fred Uche Okechukwu, Ajoku Obinna, Okachi Veronica Ogechi and Jonathan Uchendu Ifeanyi.

In a chat with newsmen in Port Harcourt, Offor noted that for “close to five years,” he has been providing scholarships to indigent students in Rivers State, some of whom, he “does not know as a person.”
“I feel bad and challenged whenever I see people suffering, and remember the Bible teaches us to help one another. Those who are privileged should endeavor to help those who are in need. In fact, the Bible admonishes us to always help one another and be our brother’s keeper”.
Beneficiaries of the award include students of the Imo State University (IMSU), Rivers State University (RSU), University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUOE) and Ken Saro Wiwa Polytechnic (KENPOLY).
These are: Eze Victor Attochi (IMSU), Wecheonwu Chizenum (RSU), Elechi Adaeze Victory (UNIPORT), Chime Godwin Chibuike (IMSU), Samuel Goodness Okekem (IAUOE), Wobilor Joshua G.
