NYSC Remains ‘the Soul of Nigeria’ ~ Bayelsa Coordinator

The Bayelsa State coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mrs Okpalifo Obiageli Charity has described the mandatory one year service by Corps members as the soul of Nigeria, and recognized by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

​Mrs Okpalifo, who disclosed this during the presentation of the NYSC Act and Bye Law lecture to 2023 Batch A, Stream 1 corps members, stated that the Act is enshrined in Nigeria’s constitution.

​According to her, the provisions and punitive measures attached to each section of both the NYSC Act and Bye Law applies to the corps members, and enjoined them to thoroughly read the documents to enable them have a sound knowledge of the operations of the scheme and pitfalls to avoid in order to have a successful service year.

​She emphasised that like other laws, ignorance of the law is not an excuse, urging the corps members to read and internalize all NYSC literatures given to them in camp in order to be abreast of the scheme’s activities as well as its rules and regulations.

​The NYSC state coordinator, in the presence of some assistant directors and other principal camp officials present during the lecture, also pointed out relevant areas in the two documents as it concerns corps members during mobilisation, orientation course, primary assignment, secondary assignment and the winding-up/passing-out programme.

​She warned that those who flout the laid down rules will be punished accordingly, while outstanding corps members will be rewarded at the end of the service year.

​Mrs Okpalifo particularly stressed the need for corps members to avoid any acts that could tarnish their records during the period of national assignment, adding that it could affect them in future.
