The National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Port Harcourt zonal council, has threatened to shut down its activities over the increasing cases of termination and victimization of its members by some companies operating in the zone.
The zonal chairman/national treasurer of NUPENG, Alex Agwanwor, who addressed reporters Friday in Port Harcourt, warned that if the affected companies continue to target union members discharging their legitimate activities, NUPENG would embark on a strike in the next seven days.
He alleged that the affected companies are OES Deep Sea Offshore, Oil Data Wireline Ltd., Jemmatek Resources Ltd., Amber Resources Labour Contractors, Nest Oil and Midis Energy Services Ltd.
Others, according to him are CKS Environmental Service Ltd, NAOC Service Contract, Recon Oil Services, Universal Energy Services and ALTEO Big. Ltd.
He said that 12 of the affected oil companies that operate within the jurisdiction of states within the Port Harcourt zonal council also engaged in “unfair practices, massive redundancies, termination/victimization and have refused to recognize the existence of NUPENG members.”
According to Agwanwor, some of the companies refused to recognize union members despite being unionized, while others deliberately terminated the appointment of union members without following due process.
He said: “After extensive deliberation of the aforementioned companies, the zonal executive council resolved to issue a seven day ultimatum effective Friday 29 June, 2018, and by midnight of Monday 9 July, 2018 the concerns of the union are not addressed by these companies, that the union shall have no choice than to embark on an indefinite strike action until our grievances are addressed.”
Also speaking, NUPENG deputy national chairman, Comrade Bassey Harry, warned that the zonal action might snowball into a national strike action if the union’s grievances are not addressed.
