The vice chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt, Professor Ozo-mekuri Ndimele, has said that the institution would become a mega university before he leaves office this year.

Speaking recently at a forum with staff of the university, the vice chancellor unveiled plans for more developmental projects in the institution, among which is a plan to build fifty units of offices for lecturers in the professorial cadre.

This is in addition to the construction of nine units of undergraduate lecture rooms, ten units of residential apartments, central administration block at Ndele campus, and a research and development centre.

He further revealed that a proposal to establish a faculty of Adult Education has been sent to the National Universities Commission for approval.

To cope with the increasing influx of students to the institution, Professor Ndimele told them that his administration has applied for the Rivers State governor, Chief Nyesom Wike’s consent to employ more staff.

Recounting some of his achievements in the past four years, the vice chancellor explained that his administration has built 10 units of residential quarters for staff, 32-unit shopping mall, graduate students hostel, central administration block at St. John’s campus, and international students’ study centre.

Others include completion of abandoned male students’ hostel, completion of faculty of education building, nine units of international students’ lecture halls, faculty of business studies complex, and improvement in electricity supply at the main campus.

According to the vice chancellor, these projects were accomplished with revenue generated internally by the university, assuring that he would complete all the projects he has started, and build more if he has the resources.

His administration equally attracted a 100-bed space female hostel built by Salvation Ministries, and a postgraduate lecture complex being constructed by the family of late Emmanuel Aguma.

“I will not abandon any project for the next VC”, he assured.

He commended the staff for their support, and reassured that he would continue to give priority to their well-being.
