Nat’l Assembly: Luke, Akpan lead Team Akwa Ibom at Midterm

Performances by Onofiok Luke and Bassey Akpan at the House of Representatives and Senate respectively gave a lift to bills sponsored by the Akwa Ibom State contingent at the 9th National Assembly.

This is according to a midterm analysis, by legislature-focused media, OrderPaper, of the nature and quality of bills sponsored by legislators in the 9th National Assembly.

OrderPaperToday said the three senators and ten members of the House posted a combined tally of 72 bills at midterm.

Sen. Bassey Albert Akpan (PDP, Akwa Ibom North-East) is the sponsor of 9 of the 11 bills sponsored by senators from Akwa Ibom State. 8 of these bills were sponsored in the first legislative year.

Sen. Akon Etim Eyakenyi (Akwa Ibom South), the only female senator from the state, has to her credit only 1 bill unlike her female counterparts from Anambra State. Her only bill was sponsored in the first legislative year.

Similarly, Sen. Christopher Stephen Ekpenyong (Akwa Ibom North-West) has only one bill in two years. Recall that Ekpenyong replaced Godswill Akpabio in a much anticipated election back in 2019. He has his only bill in the second legislative year.
