Performances by Onofiok Luke and Bassey Akpan at the House of Representatives and Senate respectively gave a lift to bills sponsored by the Akwa Ibom State contingent at the 9th National Assembly.
This is according to a midterm analysis, by legislature-focused media, OrderPaper, of the nature and quality of bills sponsored by legislators in the 9th National Assembly.
OrderPaperToday said the three senators and ten members of the House posted a combined tally of 72 bills at midterm.
Sen. Bassey Albert Akpan (PDP, Akwa Ibom North-East) is the sponsor of 9 of the 11 bills sponsored by senators from Akwa Ibom State. 8 of these bills were sponsored in the first legislative year.
Sen. Akon Etim Eyakenyi (Akwa Ibom South), the only female senator from the state, has to her credit only 1 bill unlike her female counterparts from Anambra State. Her only bill was sponsored in the first legislative year.
Similarly, Sen. Christopher Stephen Ekpenyong (Akwa Ibom North-West) has only one bill in two years. Recall that Ekpenyong replaced Godswill Akpabio in a much anticipated election back in 2019. He has his only bill in the second legislative year.
Sen. Akpan sponsored 81.82% of bill among the senators from the state while others sponsored 9.09% each. However, the 3 Senators from Akwa Ibom State sponsored 1.5% of the total bills sponsored in the first two legislative years of 9th Assembly.
Meanwhile, among the members of House of Representatives from the state, Mr. Luke (PDP, Etinan/Nsit Ibom/Nsit Ubium) distinguished himself by having a total of 22 bills to his credit constituting 36.1% of the bills sponsored by members from the state. 13 of his bills were sponsored in the first legislative year, and a good number of them relate to judiciary reforms.
Francis Charles Uduyok (PDP, Ikot Abasi/Mkpat Enin/Eastern Obolo) has sponsored 19 bills constituting 31.15% of bills sponsored by members from the state. 15 were sponsored in his first year in the 9th House.
Aniekan John Umanah (PDP, Abak/Etim Ekpo/Ika) and Ikong Nsikak Okon (PDP, Ikot Ekpene/Essien Udim/Obot Akara) have sponsored 3 bills each, both gracing the 9.84% rating.
Archibong Henry Okon (PDP, Itu/Ibiono Ibom) has sponsored 5 bills constituting 8.20% while Unyime Josiah Idem (PDP, Ukanafun/Oruk Anam) has a total of 9 bills to his credit constituting 14.7% bills sponsored by Rep members from Akwa Ibom.
However, Ifon Patrick Nathan (PDP, Eket / Esit Eket / Ibeno / Onna), Enyong Michael Okon (PDP, Uyo / Uruan /Nsit Atai / Asutan / Ibesikpo), Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo Effiong (PDP, Ikono / Ini) and Hon. Ekpenyong Nse (PDP, Mbo / Okobo / Oron / Udung Uko / Urue) did not sponsor any bill in their two years stay at the National Assembly.
The Akwa Ibom members sponsored 4.4% of the 1365 bills sponsored in the Green Chamber since the beginning of 9th Assembly.
