Following the declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day and award of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) title to the presumed winner of the 1993 presidential election, Late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olaloko Abiola, Niger Delta activist, Rev. Dr. Soberekon, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to also honour late Ijaw freedom fighter, Major Isaac Jasper Adaka Boro, and late environmental rights activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa.
Speaking in Port Harcourt during a chat with journalists, Dr Soberekon said Adaka Boro, Saro Wiwa and other Ogoni sons killed during the military era deserved award from the Federal Government for fighting for the rights of their people in the face of oppression.
Dr. Soberekon, who said Adaka Boro was the first Nigerian to receive amnesty, regretted that the Isaac Boro Park, named after the late Ijaw freedom fighter, is in shambles, adding that he once used his personal money to repair some parts of the fence and recast Boro’s name on it.
Describing the late Niger Delta freedom fighters as heroes of democracy, which is a system of government that allows the people the freedom to exercise all their rights, where no one is a master and no one is a slave, as advocated by late American President, Abraham Lincoln, Dr Soberekon appealed to President Buhari to give them post-humous awards.
He also advised the President to restructure Nigeria and write his name in gold forever, as Afenifere, the middle Belt and Ohanaeze Ndigbo recently demanded.
According to the Kalabari-born activist, popularly called Senior Advocate of the Niger Delta, declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day will not be complete without restructuring Nigeria and writing a new constitution for the nation for it to move forward.
He advised all current political office holders including the President and governors to remain in office for two more years and use that period to restructure Nigeria.
