As the world marked the International Women’s Day on March 8, women in the Niger Delta have joined the global activity with a call for issues of Inclusion and equality to be addressed in the region.

Meeting in Port Harcourt, under the auspices of Kebetkache Women Development and Resource Centre, the community women and community-based organizations, noted that the event afforded them the opportunity of drawing attention to issues of Inclusion, while recognizing the achievements of women in the society.

A release, read on behalf of Dr Emem Okon, executive director of Kebetkache Women Development and Resource Centre, by Esther Chibuzor, noted that “This year’s theme, ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress,’ is quite striking as it is a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.

“The advocacy campaign is centered on equal rights, as well as opportunities to participate in decision-making processes, mobilise political will, and gain access to resources. Also, in promoting gender equality and social inclusion, we have to forge an inclusive and equitable society,” she said.

Kebetkache Women Development & Resource Centre, according to the release, “is using this medium to re-affirm its commitment to strengthening social justice for women; while fostering an environment that provides equal opportunities for all.

“As an organisation with decades of notable achievement in building the capacity of women and protecting their fundamental human rights, Kebetkache is committed to building an eco-feminist movement in the Niger Delta, leading advocacy action for a gender-just society.

“As we celebrate this day, Kebetkache reiterates its commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of womern in all spheres of life. We recognise women’s invaluable role in our society, from nurturing families to leading businesses, shaping policies, and contributing to cultural and social advancements.

“In addition to celebrating the accomplishments of women, International Women’s Day serves as a reminder of the work that still needs to be done to achieve true gender equality. Kebetkache calls on individuals, businesses and governments to actively participate in the journey towards a more inclusive and equitable world. Let us collectively break down the barriers that limit opportunities for women and work towards a future where every woman can achieve her dreams.”

Kebetkache therefore called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to “hold off on approving the oil firms’ intended sale until after they have cleaned up and repaired the contaminated farmlands in the Niger Delta.

“Kebetkache, is also calling on Sir Siminalayi Fubara the Executive Governor of Rivers State to adopt and implement the Rivers State Gender Policy, and ensure that women are allowed to participate in governance.”

As part of activities, a group of panelists, which included journalist and Kebetkache board member, Chief Constance Meju; coordinator of Raising Young Authors, Esther Chibuzor; community activist, Lezina, and programme officer at Kebetkache, Mrs Idongesit Smart, with Nsemeke Fabian as anchor, later explored the peculiar challenges confronting women in the Niger Delta.

Chief Constance Meju drew attention to the fact that “Niger Delta women have been displaced and dispossessed by the environment and climate change, especially from floodings and oil spills. They need support and alternative livelihood and skills to enable them manage what the earth produces with what they get to take care of themselves and their families.”

Noting the need for Inclusion of women in decision making process in the Niger Delta, Meju said “We need more women representation in governance and decision making, because if we don’t have strong women representation, critical issues concerning women will be easily pushed aside. We need more women in the Executive arm of government, we need more women in the House of Assemblies and other critical areas of where policies and decision are being made, so that peculiar issues about women will be taken care of.”

Esther Chibuzor, of Raising Young Authors, pointed out that investing in women is critical to efforts at social development. She noted that empowering women with necessary skills and resources is a sure step to empowering and developing the society.

While highlighting Kebetkache’s achievements in building the capacity of women in the Niger Delta, Idongesit Smart said her organization has through mentorship and diverse initiatives, strived to create an inclusive environment where women can thrive and reach their full potential.
