Inaugural Lecture: Sciencing, Key To Societal Change ~ Green-Osahogulu

A former vice chancellor of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUOE) Rumuolumeni, in Rivers State, Prof. Rosemund Dienye Green-Osahogulu, has said that sciencing can be used as a tool for attitudinal change, and that the decay in morals in the society can be corrected through the teaching of sciencing to children at home and in school.

Prof. Green-Osahogulu, while delivering the institution’s 7th inaugural lecture, titled: ‘Sciencing: A key to Attitudinal Change’, at the university auditorium on October 12, 2017, said attitudinal change can be achieved through the use of the processes and attitude of sciencing.

She said attitudes that derive from science are: humility, patience/persistency, diligence, intellectual honesty, cleanliness, tolerance, reliability, concern for others, responsibility, resourcefulness amongst others, and that the duty of inculcating these processes and attitude to children lies on parents and teachers.

She explained that teachers can do sciencing through the use of laboratory equipments and instructional materials in teaching their students while parents can do theirs by encouraging the children to know the components of the chemicals used in the home, such as salt, toothpaste etc, and simple machines, like scissors.

Prof. Green-Osahogulu who was the first female vice chancellor of the university, said that parents and teachers can get children to acquire the science processes and attitude through the use of the strategies for attitudinal change, explaining that these strategies are; the use of some people with the right attitude to teach the children (identification), use 01 something that gives one inner joy (internalization), exposing people to training in the right attitude (mere exposure or the  precept method) and using reward or punishment rule (compliance base).

She then said that the attitude of always pronouncing blessings will help people to stop spreading falsehood, adding that “attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference”.

In his address, vice chancellor of the institution, Prof. Ozo-Mekuri Ndimele, harped on the need for government to sponsor scientific researches through adequate provision of incentives to researchers.

In a vote of thanks, Prof F A Ogunleke said Prof. Green-Osahogulu became a professor through dint of hard work.
