Flood victims in the two communities of Unenurhie and Evwreni in Evwreni kingdom, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State were recently given respite and sense of hope as aides to the deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, paid a visit to the area to ascertain the level of destruction wreaked on the communities and residents by the flood.

Addressing community leaders and the president general of Evwreni kingdom, Chief (Hon.) Victor Emuobosa Ohare, leader of the delegation, Hon. Ode Williams, said: “On behalf of the DSP and our principal, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, we sincerely sympathize with the two communities in Evwreni kingdom especially those that lost residential houses, industrial outfits, household properties, economic crops, fish farms, poultries and other agricultural ventures. We received the sad news from the papers and conveyed same to our senator. Though there was a great economic loss but we also thank God that there was no loss of life.

“Senator was really sorry about the huge economic loss. He therefore asked us to come and assess the level of damage the ravaging flood had done to the two communities. All hope is not lost. We also promise that we shall convey this report to him at Abuja immediately. We strongly believe that he will attend to your case and situation as soon as he receives this report,” he said.

The president general of Evwreni kingdom, Chief (Hon.) Victor Emuobosa Ohare thanked Omo-Agege’s aides for the visit to the two communities, adding that “we are overwhelmed with joy for this special visit. However, before I will say anything about this visit, let me tender our unreserved apology to our amiable and distinguished Senator Ovie Omo-Agege for what happened during the electioneering campaigns to Evwreni kingdom. It was masterminded by some mischief makers and political miscreants, just to paint the kingdom black before our distinguished senator.

“You have seen things for yourselves already. The pains and sufferings in the hearts of the flood victims are unbearable. There was much economic loss in the two communities. This is because as at the height of the flood, the entire community was celebrating her annual cultural festival and all the residents were not allowed to go to farms according to our cultural practices. It was a period of twenty-one days. So before our people could finish observing this long resting period, the flood had done great damage to food crops and other agricultural business ventures,” Chief Ohare said.

However, the president general of Unenurhie community, Mr. Peter Maison, solicited for empowerment schemes and provision of relief materials from the office of the deputy Senate President and NEMA for the flood victims in the two communities to help alleviate the plight of those that were affected by the ravaging flood, as it was the case in some Northern states and the Middle Belt region. He equally thanked the visiting team for the love and concern they have for the Evwreni people.

High point of the visit was on the spot assessment of those residential houses, cassava farms and fish farms affected by the flood in the two communities by the visiting team in the company of the two presidents general and other leaders of the kingdom. However, many of the flood victims were seen squatting with friends and sympathizers as there was no IDP camp created by the state or federal government to cater for the emergency needs of the victims as at the time of filing this report.
