The vicar of St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Unenurhie in the Anglican Diocese of Ughelli in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, Rev. Peter Atumremu, has called on fathers in the country to uphold moral values that would promote societal and individual development.

The renowned man of God made the call during this year’s father’s day celebration.

Addressing the congregation during the service, the cleric called on fathers to take their rightful position in the family as heads of their various families and also take their rightful position in the church as mandated by God.

“God created men to be heads of their families and not tails. This divine position is very important in our homes in respect to children upbringing. Fathers should be more dedicated and committed to children upbringing in the home to avoid moral decadence.

“In recent times, we will discover that, fathers have relegated this divine duty of children upbringing to the background. In most cases, the duty is left for the mothers to do.

“Today, many children are very stubborn and rude because their fathers are far from them in terms of discipline and moral training. This is why we are calling on all fathers in Nigeria to bridge this gap by taking up their rightful positions now. Fathers should create enduring and lasting legacies for their children. They should be role models for their children to emulate.

“The Bible says, a good name is better than riches. Let’s try as fathers to create good foundations for our children and wards to build on. This is not an occasion to just sing and dance alone. We must do the needful to promote peace and reduce crimes in our various communities. I therefore congratulate and rejoice with all fathers on this special occasion of this year’s father’s day celebration,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the Fathers’ Union of the church, the chairman of the union who is also the vice president-general of Unenurhie community, Evang. Isaac Oriodofe, thanked God for protecting all the men of the church to celebrate yet another father’s day in good health and happiness, despite the harsh economic situation of the country.

“We are today grateful to God for protecting all the men of this church to come together in peace and unity to celebrate this year’s father’s day. The economic situation of this country is not telling well on every person, but we are happy for the free gift of life to us by God.

“We want at this time to call on the Federal Government to make things comfortable for us to enable us take good care of our families. Today, crime is on the increase because there are no jobs for people to do. In the same way death toll is on the increase because government is not paying retirees their gratuities and benefits. Government should create enabling environment to enable men take their rightful positions in the society,” he said.

The Father’s Day celebration however ended with special thanksgivings organized by the Fathers’ Union of the church and supported by the women and youth groups.
