What could be described as a ‘Black Monday’ occurred at Unenurhie community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State a few days ago as the family of Mr. and Mrs. Onome Morrison Edafe lost a seven-year old child, Master Richard Edafe Onome, to an auto crash on the East-West federal road that passed through the community.

Speaking to our correspondent at the scene of the accident, a relation of the victim, Mr. Ejoke Okreghe said, “We rushed to this place as a result of the noise we heard. We learnt that, the young boy was crossing the road with an older person. They had successfully crossed the first lane and as they wanted to cross the second lane, the older person couldn’t hold the young boy very well. He then rushed into the road and this vehicle crushed him. He died immediately.

“First, it’s a very painful loss to us as a family and a community. In this case, I want to advise drivers to always limit their speed whenever they are in communities along the federal road. Even though it’s a federal road, the communities along the road also need safety and protection of their members. Their speed is always too high,” he said.

Also speaking at the accident scene, the youth chairman of Enurhie Quarters of the community, Mr. God’sPower Orunuaduvwe expressed heartfelt condolences to the Edafe family for the great loss and also cautioned the community youths to maintain peace and orderliness all through the period. The youth leader also called on the Federal Government through the NDDC to construct overhead bridges across the federal road in Unenurhie community to reduce the incessant road accidents especially when school is in session.

Efforts to speak to the DPO and the head of traffic in the Ughelli Division of the Nigerian Police Force however proved abortive as at the time of filing this report.
