Evwreni Girls: Parents Cry Out Over Security as Floods Hit School Fence

By Young Erhiurhoro, Warri

Girls Model Secondary School, Evwreni in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State was among places that the recent ravaging flood affected in the state.

During a recent visit to the school to ascertain the level of destruction, our correspondent discovered that a large part of the school fence was damaged by the flood.

Speaking with our correspondent, some of the parents and guardians who brought their children or wards to the school immediately after the mid-break, appealed to the state government to renovate the broken fence since the flood had started subsiding.

The parents, who sought to remain anonymous, said: “You know the school is a boarding school and the issue of security in this case is very paramount. The force of the flood broke part of the fence and this is a major security challenge to the school. We can’t allow our children to stay in such an open environment where its security is highly porous especially now that kidnapping and human trafficking are on the high side in this country.

“Since part of the fence is broken, anything can happen to these children which in some cases the security guards may not be aware of. It can also be an opportunity to some of the deviant children to escape from the school compound after school hours. In fact, it’s a very challenging situation,” the parents said.

The parents appealed to the Delta State government to attend to the security challenges of the school by renovating the broken fence as soon as possible.

“We are appealing to the Delta State government to come to the aid of the school by putting the broken fence in order. We are paying heavily for our children here, therefore the state government must protect the lives of the children in the school. We can’t allow our children to live in this condition.

“The commissioner for Ministry of Education (Basic and Secondary) should try as much as possible to pay assessment visit to the school and see the damage done to the school by the flood. We know that the school principal has little or nothing to do in this situation except to officially write to the ministry. We implore her to do that fast for the safety and protection of our children,” they said.

All efforts to speak to the school principal, Mrs. H. Avworokhai, on the security situation at the school proved abortive as our correspondent could not meet her during the visit.
