Eleme Caretaker Chairman Inaugurates Committee On Street Naming

Following issues associated with inadequate naming of streets in Eleme, the caretaker committee chairman of Eleme Local Government Area, Chief (Hon) Obarilomate Ollor, has set up a 16-man committee to tackle street naming and numbering in the area.

Inaugurating the committee in his office at the council secretariat last Thursday, Ollor said Eleme has grown into a metropolitan area, and is above “describing places by trees, buildings, roads or incidents.”

He lamented that security agents and emergency services, such as fire vehicles and ambulances, find it difficult responding promptly to distress calls or act on intelligence reports due to difficulties associated with describing.

Ollor said the naming of streets and numbering of houses and buildings “will enable security agencies to combat crime and reduce it to the barest minimum in Eleme Local Government Area.  It will enable the people and residents of Eleme receive mail without hardship, visitors to easily locate the address they are looking for without running into hoodlums. It will also make businesses easily identifiable and accessible and enable emergency fire, ambulance and doctors to gain access to the correct address.”

He gave the committee 14-days to liaise with traditional rulers, community development committees, youth leaders and stakeholders in various clan and conclude the task of naming the streets and numbering the residential buildings, business premises and all buildings in Eleme.

He expressed confidence in the Elder M.B. Chujor-led committee and urged them not to politicize the street naming exercise, but to approach the task with fairness to everyone and community involved.

Chairman of the Eleme Street Naming Committee, Elder Mbie Chujor, stressed the importance of street naming and numbering to a metropolis like Eleme, highlighting the ease of movement for security purpose, fire control and emergence service and boost in economic activities such exercise provides.

He said a successful conduct of the street naming exercise is necessary for the future development of Eleme, as he praised Ollor’s commitment to ensuring a proper naming of streets is bestowed on the area.

Divisional police officer of Eleme, SP Amos Taiwo, on behalf of heads of other security outfits in the area, assured the local council and committee of their commitment to the success of the street naming exercise.
