It was the fusion and celebration of the Urhobo and Isoko cultures as an Uwheru popular chief, Chief Reuben Ekpubeni, gave out his daughter in marriage in grand style.

The traditional marriage which was held on September 17, 2020 at Chief Ekpubeni’s residence at Ughelli drew together family members, friends and loved ones from the two sister-ethnic groups from far and near. Performing the traditional marriage rites as the Uwheru tradition demands for the new couple, in the presence of the groom’s family from Aviara community in Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, Chief Ekpubeni advised his daughter, Peggy, to always respect her husband and her in-laws.

“Today, I’m happy to give out my first daughter, Peggy, in marriage to a very handsome and humble Isoko young man, Mr. Elijah. As the father of the bride, I pray God to bless this marriage with good children, peace, joy, good health, long life and prosperity in Jesus name.

“After this, I want to advise this new couple to see themselves as one body, the way the Bible described husband and wife. I so much thank God that the two young people that formed this new family today are from Christian homes. Therefore, they should imbibe the spirit of love, oneness, patience and understanding, and finally, they should respect their marital vows by honouring the bed.

“As a new family, we their parents and members of both families should give them the necessary support. Let’s show them love and kindness and to also help them build stronger family ties in their new home. These are our responsibilities as their parents and family members.”

After the prayers, the arena was set for warm reception and entertainment of guests as Rucky Music Orchestra, a popular Ughelli-based Christian musician dished out sonorous songs to the audience, with the magical touch of the guitar.

Showing his appreciation to his in-laws and to other invited guests at the end of the event, the groom, Mr. Elijah who was beaming with smiles thanked all that graced the marriage ceremony.

“On behalf of my lovely wife, we have nothing to offer everybody here than our little words of appreciation. We are indeed happy today as the event was celebrated in peace and joy. This joy and happiness in us wouldn’t be there if our guests, family members and friends refused to honour our invitation. Let all the glory of the event be unto the Lord.

“Secondly, I want to thank my parents and my in-laws for the support they gave us since the beginning of this race. They really supported us and showed us practical love. I want to also thank the vicars and members of our church for their prayers, financial support and encouragement.”

Meanwhile, a wedding service was held on September 19, 2020 at St. Michael’s Anglican Church, Ekredjobor-Ughelli to tie the new couple’s nuptial knot after the traditional marriage. The marriage ceremony was attended by Uwheru Council of Chiefs, St. Michael’s Anglican Church, Ekredjobor-Ughelli, Ekredjebor community, Eruemukohwarien community, Aviara community, friends, family members and others. The event ended with the traditional escort of the bride to her husband and her matrimonial home at Aviara community.
