Eggheads Int’l Urges Public, Private Investment on Sports Development

March 2, 2019 remains a memorial day in the annals of Eggheads International School, Mgbesilaru, in Rivers State as pupils, students and staff of the school rolled out the drums to celebrate their biennial sports competition.

The event was designed to discover new talents and to encourage students to develop their potentials in various sporting activities. 

A clement weather further enhanced students and pupils’ performances in the different sporting activities, while parents and guests were on hand to join in the sports and celebration.

Chairman of the occasion, Mr. Chimbuo Victor stressed the importance of sports in the development of students and urged them to be diligent and committed in their endeavours.

In her address, deputy director of the school, Mrs. Grace E. Williams said sporting activities had become established norm, a veritable means of fostering local and international cooperation amongst people of divers background, heritage, culture and custom.

Outlining the development of sports in Nigeria and its effects on humans, she urged government to make sports compulsory in school, for physical and mental development of students.

Mrs. Williams said: “Sporting activities have been part of our culture and natural living of a man in general. They have direct relationship with purposes of goals of human beings. Sports have existed with education since a long time ago. Sports like football, handball, volley ball, tennis, athletics etc have corroborated teaching and learning activities at all levels of education; be it formal or non-formal education in Nigeria.”

The deputy director urged governments, organizations, and individuals to invest more in sports development, in order to encourage full participation of youths, and also minimize youth restiveness. It shall also promote internal cooperation, honours and decent means of earning a living, she added.

“Funding, parents should come and sponsor our different houses. If these challenges are overcome, the sporting activities can project Nigerian education more for overall development both nationally and internationally,” Mrs. Williams said.

In his remarks, the director of Eggheads International School, Professor Ezekiel E. Williams said: “Egghead International School is renowned school that provides quality and quantitative education to pupils and students. I urged parents/ guardians to use this opportunity to secure admission for them at affordable fees. We guarantee quality education and conducive environment for their studies.”

Professor Williams tasked students participating in the sporting activities to demonstrate a great spirit of sportsmanship while hoping that one day, they should be a winner. He urged losers to cheer up and prepare harder for the next event.

The school director said: “What we are doing today is to inculcate discipline into students and to be humble in victory. Others who could not make it, should work hard, next year you are going to be number one. We delivered the decision without bias. Let the losers take it with spirit of sportsmanship.”

At the end of the inter-house, Yellow House came first, with 110 points; the second position went to the Red House that scored 101 points, while the third position was grabbed by Blue House with 80 points. In March pass, White House came first with 11 points and Yellow House bagged second position.

Students actively participated in sporting activities such as 100 and 200 meters race boys and girls, high jump, tennis, volley ball. Primary pupils thrilled the crowd with their wonderful performances on; filling the bottle and egg race for both boys and girls. There were parents’ women 100 meters race and men 100 meters race. The staff of the school both academic and non-academic participated in the 100 meters race.
