As elections into various community positions in Unenurhie, Evwreni kingdom, in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, draw near, according to the date officially announced by the Mr. Williams Ilayah-led Electoral Committee, the president-general of the oil rich community, Mr. Peter Maison, has advised indigenes and residents, especially aspirants and youths to toe the part of peace and unity and avoid anything that would lead to the breakdown of law and order in the community.
In an interview he granted the press at his residence in the community recently, the president-general said, “As a community union, we have a constitution which regulates our electoral processes and every aspect of the community administration as far as the union is concerned.
“In a recent National Executive Council meeting, which included our traditional council of elders and chiefs and all our branches nationwide, we duly constituted and inaugurated a five-man electoral committee saddled with the responsibilities of conducting free, fair and credible elections in the community.
“The committee, after the inauguration, began its work by fixing the date of the elections which is slated for the 22nd of March, 2022 at the community town hall. Thereafter, it opened the floor for all eligible indigenes to collect electoral forms into the various elective positions they intended to contest.
“After the collection and submission of the forms, it now scheduled a date for screening of contestants. And finally, the election will come as scheduled. All these were done in accordance with the constitution of the union. Also, I want to announce that the electoral committee is independent of any arm of leadership in the community, including the UCDU government.”
The president-general further said, “As it is at the moment, we are hearing information that some persons are bent on fomenting trouble in the community before, during or after the elections. In fact, these people are already threatening the peace of the community as I speak to you, saying that there is no constitution in the community, and do not recognized the electoral committee.
“We also heard that other set of disgruntled community leaders from Evwreni community, in full collaboration with a particular local government chairman in the state, are solidly behind these miscreants and trouble makers to cause mayhem and another round of crisis in our community because they want to hijack power from us by crooked means.”
The president-general, Mr Maison, however called on such people to stay away from anything that could cause crisis in the community.
Hear him: “As the incumbent president-general of the community, I’m making a passionate appeal to anybody or group of persons or their agents that want to foment trouble or cause crisis in the community to please give peace a chance to thrive in the community.
“The UCDU elections are open to all eligible indigenes of the community, both at home and in the Diaspora. Nobody is imposing people on the community as leaders without the democratic and due process of elections. The community has a constitution and everybody should obey that constitution. As we speak, we as a responsible leadership in the community have reported all these security challenges to the police and other security agencies for immediate intervention. Therefore, anybody who goes contrary to the constitution and the rules of the electoral committee will definitely face the full wrath of the law without remedies.”
The elections which are fixed to hold on March 22nd, 2022 would be conducted through the open ballot system and by delegates.
On behalf of Enurhie youth we appreciate the effort of the Pg towards the achievement of peace during and after the elections as we don’t want the death of our innocent youth anymore
