Delta: Ughelli DPO Inaugurates Unenurhie Vigilante Group

The much awaited community policing and security outfit, Unenurhie Vigilante Group, has been officially inaugurated by the DPO, Ughelli Police Station, ‘A’ Division, Mr. Asanaenyi Ibok, towards ensuring the protection of lives and properties in Unenurhie community, Evwreni kingdom in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State. 

The inauguration, which took place on Thursday May 19, 2022, was held at the community town hall with leaders and elders of the community in attendance.

In his remarks at the event, president-general of the community, Mr. Peter Maison, thanked the state commissioner of Police and the Ughelli DPO for approving the request for establishing the vigilante group in the community.

Hear him: “Security is everybody’s business and concern. That’s why the government has approved community policing and local security agencies like this vigilante group to support the police and other federal security agencies to protect the lives and properties of all Nigerians.

“Therefore, I want to thank our state commissioner of police and also our DPO for this great work today. As a responsible leadership in this community, we always follow the due process of the law in doing anything in this community.

“The purpose and objective of establishing this vigilante group today in our community is not to oppress or intimidate anybody but to protect us from the different security challenges bedeviling the country at the moment. I want to enjoin every indigene or resident of this community to give the vigilante group the needed support and encouragement,” he said.

In his speech, the Ughelli DPO, Mr. Ibok, applauded the president-general of Unenurhie community for understanding that security is a fundamental need and priority of the entire community. The DPO also described Unenurhie community as one of the most peaceful communities in his district since he assumed duties as the station head.

“I must commend your president-general, Mr. Peter Maison, and his excos for running a peaceful and responsible leadership in the community. These are the kind of community leaders that we want if truly, we want development and peace in our various communities.

“To all the members of the vigilante group, I want to advise you to always work in synergy with the community leadership to achieve the goals and objectives of this local security outfit. You must obey and respect constituted authorities. Don’t take laws into your hands by using fire arms to oppress or intimidate the people because you are a member of the vigilante group. Your work here is to support us to maintain peace and order in the community. Once you have any challenge, please call on us.”

After the inauguration, chairman of the Unenurhie Vigilante Group, Mr. Friday Diamond, on behalf of the other members of the group expressed appreciation to the DPO and his delegation for making the dream come to pass.

The young security expert also thanked the president-general of the community, Mr. Peter Maison, and all the other leaders for giving them the needed support in logistics, training and finance. Mr. Diamond however promised to abide by the rules and orders of community policing as set by the state government.

A total of fifteen persons were later inaugurated in the group.
