Two persons, kidnapped along the stretch of the East-West road between Evwreni and Ogor communities, were recently released after their families paid the ransoms demanded.
Speaking to our correspondent after their release, one of the victims (name withheld), who is an indigene of Unenurhie community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State said, “I’m grateful to God and to all those that helped me out of this serious travail.
“If not for the mercy of God, my late father would have been buried in my absence. Again, I would have been deprived of going to my NYSC orientation camp. Today, I’m happy as I secured my freedom despite the financial challenges it has posed on my family members and friends.
“I was kidnapped just three days to my late father’s burial here in Unenurhie. This threw everybody in the community into mourning. It wasn’t only me. The wife of a former youth chairman of this community (name also withheld), was also a victim. We boarded the vehicle together before the unfortunate incidence happened. I thank God for regaining my freedom.”
In the same way, the husband of the second victim who was a past youth chairman of Unenurhie community, said, “I’m happy that my wife and our brother that were kidnapped by unknown gunmen few days ago were released without hurt. Truly, we paid heavily, but the joy is that they were released at last.
“There were kidnap cases like this, after paying much, the victims would still be killed. This is why I want to thank God and everybody that stood with us all through the period. Time won’t permit me to mention names of those that helped me out to raise money and also those that prayed for me. It’s now I and my little kids are being relieved of the emotional trauma the ugly incident threw at us. At last, glory be to God.”
Meanwhile, road users especially passengers have continued to complain about the kidnapping gang that have been terrorizing the Evwreni and Ogor axis of the federal road, despite the many police checking points mounted on the road every day.
They again called on the Delta State commissioner of police to draft a special kidnapping police team to keep watch on that part of the road especially during this yuletide season to avoid these incessant kidnappings.
