Delta: Bandits Kidnap ‘Travellers along Ughelli, Patani Road’

By Young E. Freeborn, Warri

The East/West federal road has now become a beehive of criminal activities as kidnapping, armed robbery and banditry has continued to make daily headlines across Delta State.

The recent one was the kidnapping of four persons identified as GKS members traveling to Warri. The kidnap attack which was carried out by alleged bandits between Ogor and Evwreni axis of the federal road was however linked to the alleged Fulani herdsmen terrorizing those communities.

Speaking to our correspondent immediately the distress call was received, an official of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) at Unenurhie community who spoke under condition of anonymity said, “We just received the distress call few minutes ago, that a private vehicle which was coming from Port-Harcourt to Warri was attacked by unknown gunmen between Ogor and Evwreni axis of the road.

“As we speak, they said it was a kidnap attack and they have been taken to unknown destination. Their whereabouts is yet to be known. Also, I want to say this, these continuous armed robbery attacks and kidnappings on this federal road especially this Ogor and Evwreni axis shouldn’t just be linked to these Fulani herdsmen. Many of these criminal activities are done by our boys from these communities.

“I want to advise community leaders from these places to always be on the watch. These criminal activities are only destroying our images as bad communities and weak leaders. The Delta State government should also consider the community policing to improve our security. The government is not even helping road users as it supposed to be.”

All efforts to speak to the DPO, ‘A’ Division, Ughelli on the kidnap attack proved abortive as he could not be reached by our correspondent.
