Delta 2023: Governance, Politics Are Not for Highest Bidder ~ Ebegba

By Young E. Freeborn, Warri

The director general and chief executive officer of the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), Chief Dr. Rufus Ebegba, has said that Deltans have the moral justification to expect a new political and governance system, while urging political actors to deemphasized the wrong perception and use of money in electoral contests.

Dr Ebegba, a two-term NBMA DG and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Delta State, stated this during the public presentation of the agency’s National Biosecurity and Action Plan in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

He said, “There have been lots of opinions from across Delta State, urging some of us to pioneer a new political system, with a view to ensuring that people really have a feel and perfect understanding of politics and governance as it relates to the state. When we consider the political system that has been prominent in the state, one can only agree that after 24 years, it is long overdue for a change to be effected.”

The APC governorship hopeful said, “Part of this change is to adequately communicate with the people to inspire better decisions; decisions that will not be the basis of immediate financial gratification, but to protect the future of citizens and the state.

“Money is necessary for political contests.  However, the practice of buying support for political/public office is against every moral principle known to man and I condemn it in its entirety. We must know that when we sell or buy political support, we have transacted our rights in exchange to the dividends of democracy and a better society for our innocent children. It therefore means the government has been purchased by the highest bidder”.

Dr Ebegba however appealed to members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State to live up to the dictates of progressive politics by remaining loyal and committed to the constitution and constituted hierarchy of the party, while working through civil and generally acceptable means to ensure that there was equal opportunity for all as enshrined in the party and the nation’s constitution.

“There is nothing wrong in having variants of opinions on different political issues from different political groups. It is the beauty of politics and nature. But at all times, we must seek to know the best position to take in the interest of the party, and stand by it to the logical end,” he said.

The NBMA DG who recently hosted stakeholders of the nation’s Biosecurity sector and others to the public presentation of the National Biosecurity Policy and Action Plan (NBP-AP) 2022 – 2026, approved by President Muhammadu Buhari, also urged Deltans to give critical consideration to technocracy and professionalism, when deciding the next leadership of the state.

He said, “In governance, we can’t continue to underestimate the importance of having leaders with the technical know-how of the way an emerging economy like Delta State should be structured and organized. When we choose leaders, we must consider their background and performance in previous capacities. We must choose those who have proven track records of effective organization, integrity and progressive accountability.

“Deltans can however expect this from us in 2023, and with this set of leaders working hand-in-hand with the people, surely the state will be on the path to progress and transformation.”
