Daewoo, N’ Delta Youths Agree On Workers’ Pay, Welfare

Following contentions over Daewoo workers’ pay-off, and a subsequent meeting on October 6, 2017 in Port Harcourt by representatives of Daewoo Nigeria Limited and Indorama, Daewoo workers’ chairman, Amadi Chu, and leadership of the Niger Delta Youth Movement (NDYM), Rivers chapter, have agreed that “the purported agreement to a pay-off, end of contract bonus and entitlements was never reached nor signed by any of the parties in the matter.

Leadership of the NDYM, Rivers State chapter had come down hard on the management of Daewoo over the alleged refusal of the company to pay the workers entitlement.  But, yesterday (Tuesday), chairman of the youth movement, Comrade Austin Ijeoma, said “it is clear that the agreement was never reached nor signed before the workers were disengaged.”

Ijeoma said resolutions reached at Tuesday’s meeting were to restore peace and industrial harmony in Rivers State, to lay the matter of workers’ pay-off to rest once and for all and also clear Daewoo’s corporate image as a responsible corporate entity. “Niger Delta Youth Movement wants to clearly state that all protestations and agitation, whatsoever on this matter should stop forthwith,” Ijeoma said, as he warned that “any contrary action by any group on the issue of pay-off, contract bonus and entitlements will not be taken kindly by NDYM.

“NDYM is available to receive and entertain any complaints that might arise from the matter.

“We want to commend Daewoo and Indorama for their patience in the matter.  We want to encourage them to give more job openings to Niger Delta youths so as to give us a sense of belonging.

“The companies should also not forget that according to the Nigerian Content Act stipulates the deliberate inclusion of Nigerians and host communities in job opportunities, contracts and procurement.  We as NDYM will continue to uphold and fight for the interest and welfare of the youths and people the Niger Delta region.  We also call on Daewoo and Indorama to continue to maintain a peaceful co-existence with their host communities and the Niger Delta people,” Ijeoma said.

Chairman of NDYM, Eleme chapter, Comrade Osarokaka Jonah also commended Daewoo for their forthrightness and for seeking an amicable resolution to the workers’ pay-off issue.

He said that in partnership with Daewoo, NDYM will reach out to other aggrieved groups and person and seek a resolution of such contentious issues.
