Paramount ruler of Nortem Bori Community in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, Chief Gabriel Igbara, has lauded the management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for establishing the Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers, HIRD, a scheme aimed at taking care of the health needs of the indigent in the country.
Chief Igbara who made the commendation during the official flag-off of the 2021 HIRD programme held in the community last Monday, expressed appreciation to the director general of the NYSC, Brig. Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, for finding his community worthy to benefit from the HIRD programme.
He assured Gen Ibrahim in particular, and the NYSC scheme, of the support of the Nortem Bori community, Ogoni Kingdom and Rivers State towards the successful implementation of the scheme’s policies and programmes.
In an address to officially flag off the 4-day HIRD programme in Rivers State, the DG NYSC, Brig. Gen Ibrahim, represented by the director, Community Development Service and Special Projects, Alhaji Abdulrazak Salawu, described the HIRD programme as a carefully thought out initiative of the NYSC top management, aimed at “promoting the wellbeing of indigent persons at the grassroots by granting them easier access to free and quality healthcare”.
Gen Ibrahim used the occasion to commend and eulogize the director, Finance and Accounts, Mr. Mkinebari Adokor, for being “a worthy son of Nortem Bori community,” noting that his good nature and exceptional personality helped sway management to choose his community for the flag off of the programme in the state.
The NYSC boss went further to appreciate the government and people of Rivers State for their support to the scheme and also thanked the Corps Medical Volunteers and NYSC field officers for their tireless efforts towards the success of the flag off of the programme in the state.
In a goodwill message, the director, Finance and Accounts, Mr. Mkinebari Adokor expressed deep appreciation to the DG, NYSC for approving his community as the host of the flag off exercise. He also thanked the director CDS & SP, Alhaji Abdulrazak Salawu and other NYSC staff for coming in person to be part of the programme.
Earlier, Chief Chinwendu Chukwu, the Rivers State NYSC coordinator had informed the gathering that the HIRD programme has achieved a lot in the lives of the vulnerable and indigent members of various communities who have benefitted immensely from it since it was first launched.
The flag-off ceremony attracted political, traditional and community leaders from Nortem Bori, members of staff of the NYSC, corps members and patients who trooped out en masse to access free medical attention.
The ceremony also featured health talks, U-report sensitization as well as consultation by doctors and administration of drugs by the Corps Medical Volunteers.
