The Bayelsa State commissioner of Police, CP Mike Okoli, has assured residents of peaceful and hitch-free Bayelsa West and Central senatorial elections on Saturday, commending the IGP on the deployment of 5000 personnel.
This includes units of mobile policemen, to check hoodlums against violence and electoral malpractice.
This assurance was made by the commissioner of Police while briefing the press on his command’s preparedness for the forthcoming election.
He however charged the Police personnel to be professional in their duties, adding that anything to the contrary will be met with severe actions.
He further warned politicians and electorate against electoral malpractices and violence at polling units, adding that “election is not do or die affairs.”
Okoli said personnel have been deployed to all the riverine communities, in gunboats and commercial boats, ahead of the election to effectively police the area.
“Ekeremor, Sagbama and Southern Ijaw local government areas are all riverine communities where elections are taking place are riverine communities,” he said.
He assured that the command is poised to replicate the successes recorded during the Edo and Ondo governorship elections.
“However, l want the good people of Bayelsa State to conduct themselves peacefully for us to deliver.”
On students writing the West African Examinations Council, he said policemen have been instructed to conduct search to ascertain the authenticity of students going to write examination.
“Students are expected to be equipped with writing materials, Identity cards. Once that is established, they will be freed, as they would not be difficult to know as students.”
He also disclosed that there will be restriction of movement from 600 to 1400 hours.
Recall, the Bayelsa West and Bayelsa Central senatorial elections were earlier fixed for 31 October, 2020, and rescheduled for December 5, 2020 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
