Bayelsa Queens Maintain Momentum in Gov Diri Female Pre-season Football Tournament

Bayelsa Queens on Tuesday produced a composed performance against Rivers Angels in day three of the ongoing Governor Douye Diri Pre-season Football Tournament in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.

‎The Prosperity Girls humbled neighbours Rivers Angels by three goals to one to secure six points after two matches. Rofiat Bankole put the hosts ahead on 9 minute but the Pride of Rivers restored parity on 27 minutes through Zainab Oduga’s long range effort.

‎Two minutes later, Alaba Olabiyi restored the lead for the Prosperity Girls from a distant effort while Janet Akekoromowei on 51 minutes added salt to Rivers Angels’ injuries to make it 3-1 with a beautiful finish.

‎Nasarawa Amazons in the first match of the day edged out Delta Queens by two goals to one just as FC Robo Queens pipped Heartland Queens of Owerri by a lone goal. Bayelsa Princesses in the last game of Matchday three spanked Abia Angels two nil.

‎Wednesday will witness a break in the tournament. However, hostilities  will resume on Thursday, October 23, 2025 as Rivers Angels welcome Nasarawa Amazons by 8:00am while Bayelsa Queens will take on youthful Imo Strikers at 12:00pm.

‎Abia Angels in group B will tackle neighbours Heartland Queens at 2:00pm, Bayelsa Princesses will lock horns with Edo Queens at 4:00pm while FC Robo Queens of Lagos are drawn bye. All games will be decided at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa.

‎Bayelsa Queens Technical Adviser, Whyte Ogbonda in his reaction, noted that the competition has exposed the team’s areas of weakness and strength before going into the new NWFL season next month.

‎He commended the girls for the show of dexterity and commitment throughout the encounter, stating that the team would make more additions before the commencement of the league.

‎Despite the defeat, Delta Queens Technical Adviser, Tosin Blankson believes there are positives to take home having played two games in the tournament, maintaining that the showpiece has helped his team to showcase what they intend to achieve in the league.

‎He expressed optimism that his team will contend for the 2025/2026 Nigeria Women Football League, NWFL title, noting that the competition was coming at a perfect time.
