As the Bayelsa State governorship elections draw nearer, more groups, this time under the aegis of Bayelsa Consolidation Movement, have intensified support with other well-meaning patriotic groups to urge Arc Reuben Okoya to declare his interest to contest the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the state.
They stressed that a cursory look at persons that have been touted as governorship aspirants, Arc Reuben Okoya stands out and has distinguished himself in private and public domain as the man who the cap fits to govern the state at the moment.
Addressing a news conference at the NUJ in Yenagoa, the director general of the Bayelsa Consolidation Movement (BCN), Tommy Ere said the group which has no affiliation with any other group is an independent one, adding that they had verified all the names thrown up for governorship race and found out that he (Okoya) is more qualified even though others are qualified for the plumb position.
Parts of the statement read: “However only person will eventually occupy the seat of governor, therefore as a group of well-meaning and patriotic Bayelsans, to whom the unity, speed, prosperity and progress of our beloved state is a big deal, we have identified one man among the lot as best suited for the job.
“We take this position on the basis of this individual’s humility, comportment, background, exposure, records of service in the private and public sectors, creativity, passion and compelling vision for the growth and development of our great state.
“The man we refer to is none other than Arc Reuben Okoya. We are very confident that under his watch, Bayelsa will make rapid and sustainable progress that will positively impact on the lives of all Bayelsans and non-indigenes alike,” he said.
The group also called on the political parties, PDP and APC to seize this opportunity to deepen internal democracy within their parties by upholding democratic tenets of transparency, fairness and equity.
The group also called on the main political parties to consider the principles of zoning in choosing their flag bearer for the gubernatorial election.
According to the statement, “we are of the strong view that the central senatorial district, made up of Southern Ijaw having produced the first executive governor, late Chief DSP Alamieyeseigha, should concede this privilege, this time around to Yenagoa and Kolokuma/Opokuma to produce the candidates that will vie to become the next governor, while it plays the respectable role of king makers.”
