The Bayelsa State Cricket Association has written a letter of protest to the National Sports Commission (NSC) regarding the upcoming Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) election.
The association’s chairman, Pakribo Telema-Daregoe, alleged that the current NCF president, Uyi Akpata, is attempting to unilaterally impose a “doctored constitution” for the election without proper consultation or transparency.
The association claims that Akpata’s proposed constitution has not undergone due process, including stakeholder consultations and approval.
The letter emphasized that the International Cricket Council (ICC) does not interfere in the internal affairs of its member countries, contradicting Akpata’s claim that the ICC has approved the new constitution.
The association argues that Akpata’s actions would make him both a contestant and an umpire in the election, undermining the integrity of the process.
The letter warned that allowing the disputed constitution to stand could lead to a “clear and present sporting disaster” with dire consequences for cricket in Nigeria.
The association stressed that the interests of critical stakeholders, including cricket associations and players, are being disregarded in the process.
The Bayelsa State Cricket Association requests the NSC to intervene and stop Akpata’s alleged attempt to foist an illegitimate constitution on the NCF, ensuring a fair and transparent election process.
