Bayelsa Commemorates World TB Day 2021

… Calls for Preventable Actions

Bayelsa State TB Referral Hospital, Igbogene, joined the rest of the world to take part in this year’s activities, through radio talks, street procession and press briefing.

According to Dr. Tuebi Richman Wilson, who is the doctor- in-charge of the TB Referral Hospital, “each year we commemorate the world Tuberculosis TB Day on March 24 to raise public awareness concerning the devastating health, social and economic consequences of TB and to step up efforts to end the global epidemic.”

He however said, this year’s theme ‘The Clock is Ticking’ aptly conveys the essence that the world is running out of time to act on the commitment to end TB made by global leaders, which is especially critical in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic that has put end-TB progress at risk, and to also ensure equitable access to prevention and care in line with WHO’s drive towards achieving universal health coverage.

He said the activities lined up were aimed at campaign and sensitization on the fact that TB is curable, adding that whenever people notice some coughing regularly, they should not panic, but seek medical attention by consulting a doctor at the TB referral hospital at lgbogene.

He said that unlike other ailments, TB treatment is free.

TB remains one of the world’s deadliest infectious killers. “Each day, nearly 4000 lose their lives to TB and close to 28,000 people fall ill with this preventable and curable disease,” he said.
