Atamu Social Club Ends 5th Finishing School, Urges Youths to Shun Crime

The Atamu Social Club, Lagos has ended its 5th finishing school at Abraham’s Place, Ughelli, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, with a call on Nigerian youths to shun crime and fraudulent online businesses, otherwise known as ‘Yahoo Yahoo.’

The finishing school, which is organized yearly by the Urhobo socio-cultural organization, a non-profit organization, was primarily focused on undergraduates and graduates of varying degrees and from different tertiary institutions across the country. 

Speaking on this year’s theme, ‘Building Resilience in Difficult Times: Fundamental Skills to Achieve Success,’ the guest lecturer, Deacon Ogaga Darlington Chuks, who spoke extensively on the topic from his personal experiences in attaining success in life, advised the trainees to always have a clear focus on life and how to achieve success in it.

Deacon Ogaga, who is a renowned motivational speaker and author, warned the young graduates and undergraduates not to join the band wagon in venturing into fraudulent and criminal acts of making wealth.

The lecture which lasted over two hours afforded the youths the opportunity to interact and ask the speaker questions.

Also speaking on a sub-theme, ‘Human development,’ Dr. Benson Uwheru, who was the moderator and also the co-ordinator of the programme in Delta State, defined a finishing school as a school that is dedicated to the all round development of the people.

The erudite scholar and a UN management expert itemized the three stages of development to include, dependence, independence and inter-dependence. He however advised the youths to imbibe the spirit of inter-dependence as he considered that stage most important in achieving success and greatness in life. 

President of the social club, Mr. Teddy Omusi Okumakube, who spoke on the topic, ‘Financial independence,’ defined the term to mean attaining an economic status where one can reliably pay all his living expenses without depending on the government or people. The Urhobo leader taught the trainees to develop the habit of saving early enough to enable them become financially independent in life. 

The lecture section of was rounded up by Mr. Abraham Ogbodo, a former editor of The Guardian Newspapers and also the CEO of Abraham’s Place, while speaking generally on financial management, especially in the difficult times Nigerians found themselves at the moment, as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, which is causing economic crisis in Nigeria and other African countries.

The media consultant however told the trainees to always create innovative business ideas from the economic situation of the country to reduce the rate of unemployment among them.

Some of the young graduates and undergraduates, who came mainly from Michael and Cecilia Ibru University, Agbarha-Otor appreciated the leadership of the Atamu Social Club for pulling their financial resources together every year to give them this training.

Speaking on behalf of the other young people, Mr. John said, “I’m happy that I came to this training today. Assuming I didn’t come, it would have pained my spirit for missing this knowledge and the sharing of ideas together.

“Indeed, I’m grateful to the leadership of the social club for this kind gesture for us. Though, I’m not an Urhobo by tribe, but I have benefited immensely from the programme. It has afforded all of us the opportunity to meet with successful leaders today. These are great achievers of success and we have lots to learn from them. Their lives and how they make wealth is a big lesson to learn. Also, we still want the government to provide us with loans to start off any business venture of our dreams,” he said.

The one-day training programme ended with the presentation of certificates to participants. The training was attended by over seventy young people drawn from different tertiary institutions across the state, including the Michael and Cecilia Ibru University.
