Senate President and former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godwin Akpabio has cautioned married couples against undue indulgence to social media platforms stating that it has negatively affected relationships in many homes.
Senator Akpabio who was special guest of honor at the wedding of a relation to the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi last Saturday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, decried the trend in which couples pay attention and concentrations more to their cellphone’s media platforms at the expense of their marriage vows stressing that good husbands and wives cannot be easily found on the social media.
” Don’t concentrate too much on social media. You can’t find a husband in social media, Facebook, neither can you find a husband in Tik Tok. Try to go out there and associate,” Akpabio admonished.
The Senate President expressed worries at the trends where married couples had become married to their cellphones more than to their conjugal duties and companionship explaining that the westerners who manufactured the phones were not stupid when they named the product a cellphone. “They know that once you buy one, you have hooked yourself to a cell and you will stay inside that cell. So once in a while, get out of your cell and mix with others and God will give you the desired of your heart,” he stated.
The Senate President recalled an incident he was told during his days as Governor of Akwa Ibom state where the issues of cellphone led to the death of a husband in the home.
“I remember the story of a man who started looking for his phone in their home and accused the wife of hiding the phone but he did not know that he was sitting on the phone. He checked everywhere for the phone but could not find it. He ran inside the kitchen and gave the woman a dirty slap and the wife in anger just turned and pick the knife in the kitchen and stabbed the man on the stomach and the man bled to death. They latter discovered that he was even sitting on the phone on the chair. So the Cellphones that should serve for communication has led to deaths in many homes”, he said.
According to the former Governor, it is not about how long a marriage has lasted but how peaceful and fruitful, the marriage has been.
“Marriage brings blessings. I remember I made my first one million after I married my wife even though I still long for the second million since then”, Akpabio stated.
He therefore charged the newly wedded to be cautious in listening to advice from their friends and family members but learn to mend their mistakes by themselves.
“Please learn to keep one bedroom, so that you can always settle your quarrels when it happens,” he said.
Senator Akpabio also called on the couple to consider doing away with their old cellphones and buy new ones in order to do away with old friends adding that old things has passed away. “Couples should not be overzealous by hugging old classmates because people may mistake such as messing up or a sign of infidelity. So start to be careful with your old friends. Those who want your friendship will look for you”, he declared.
