Commendations have continued to pour in for Rivers Angels Football Club of Port Harcourt, following her feat of emerging champion of the 2025 edition of the Nigeria Challenge Cup, now rechristened President /Federation Cup.
The latest came from the chairman of Rivers Angels Supporters Club, Hon. lnnocent Ajaelu, who described the victory recorded by the girls last week at the Mobolaji Stadium Lagos as one of the sweetest, enviable and remarkable feat achieved by a state government-owned football team.
The elated Ajaelu lauded the fighting spirit of Rivers Angels team, in coming from behind (0-2 down) to lift the coveted trophy against Nasarawa Amazons.
The game ended 4-2 via penalty shootout after both sides had scored 2-2 at regulation time.
He said, “It takes a compact and determined side as Rivers Angels FC, that has as defined focus, to fight back like a wounded lion to level up a scoreline of 2-0 down and go ahead to beat her opponent 4-2, through penalty shootout, to lift the trophy at stake.”
Ajaelu whose passion and support for the ‘Jewels of Rivers State,’ as they are fondly called, minced no words to say that “it is obvious that Rivers Angels FC has rediscovered her winning streak. I’m believing and looking forward to see the players stepping up their game, and not resting on their oars, with a view to winning more laurels for Rivers State.”
The football administrator, who has travelled widely for the game of football, also seized the opportunity to thank the Rivers State Sole Administrator Vice Admiral lbok-ete lbas (rtd), for making a pledge of N50 million for members of the victorious Rivers Angels team, in appreciation of their efforts in doing the state proud by winning the prestigious Nigeria women FA Cup, which had eluded the state for years.
