Gender Advocacy Groups Open Domestic Violence Clinic in Bayelsa

Gender advocacy groups, the Do Foundation International and the Hilarity World Foundation, have opened a domestic Violence Clinic in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, so as to provide medical, legal and psycho-socio support to victims of domestic and sexual violence in the state.

According to the founder of Do Foundation, Barr. Dise Ogbise, and president of Hilarity World Foundation, Miss Grace Ukpevie, the Domestic Violence clinic is expected to also provide financial support to the victims and the creation of career and business support in order to create a means of livelihood for them after separation from their abusers.

President of Do Foundation International, Barr. Dise Ogbise, while speaking at the opening ceremony of the Domestic Violence clinic tagged ‘Exposing Domestic Violence,’ expressed concern over the rising cases of domestic violence and noted that despite the worrisome trend the advocacy groups in the state are gaining grounds in efforts to educate, intervene and stop violence against women.

She also noted that the domestic violence clinic will provide avenue for victims to have access to advocacy groups instead of dying in silence while suffering sexual and domestic violence.

Also, president of the Hilarity World Foundation, Miss Grace Ukpevie, pointed out that the domestic violence clinic is an online and mobile clinic for domestic violence victims and survivors, adding that “the goal is to ease the stress survivors go through when seeking help.”

Wives of the chairman of the state traditional rulers’ council, Queen Dakolo and Queen Tessy Diongoli expressed support for the growing campaign against sexual and domestic violence, while condemning situations where parents negotiate with violators in order to stop prosecution.

Other advocacy groups present at the occasion, including the facilitator of the NBA Women Forum, Sagbama branch, Barr. Ebiere Ekpese; member of the Gender Response Initiative Team(GRIT), Mrs. Blessing Komonibo;  vice chairman of the NUJ, Bayelsa Council, Judith Young; chairperson of FIDA, Bayelsa, Deme Debra Pamosoo Esq, represented by a former FIDA Bayelsa  chairperson, Pere Amanda Egbuson esq; executive director of the Starrz Safety Initiative, Mary Accra Bekeowei; the international president of Do Foundation International, Boma Tonye Miebai Esq and the chairperson of Do Foundation, Bayelsa, Ubodium Deghipulu,  declared their  commitment to the campaign and the domestic violence clinic in the state.
