The Association of Medical Laboratories Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) has ended its 57th Annual Conference and Workshop in Yenagoa, capital of Bayelsa State.
The event, which began Thursday, came to a close on Sunday.
Our correspondent reports that the event which had in attendance Medical Lab scientists from the 36 states of the Nigeria and participants from other neighbouring African nations focused on proffering solutions to contemporary issues confronting the profession.
Speaking with newsmen on the sidelines, national president of the association, Prof. James Damen, commended members for their undying spirit in maintaining the profession’s ethical standards at their various duty posts.
He noted that upon the outbreak of the novel Covid-19 pandemic, members of the profession were in the fore front of the fight against the deadly virus.
Damen called on government to collaborate with the association towards equipping health facilities in the nation with modern infrastructure needed for scientific breakthrough in the health sector of the country.
Also, chairman of the local organizing committee, AMLSN, Eunice Suoteigha George, attributed the success of the event to the peace and tranquility in the state, adding that Bayelsa’s desire to be host was borne out of the fact that “we want to change the negative perspective people outside the state have that it is home to kidnapping, pipeline vandalism and other vices.
“To their surprise none had been attacked, robbed, but they (participants) are relishing in the hospitality and warmth of the state,” she said.
According to the local organizing committee chairman, the conference had added boost to the state’s economy as hotels were fully booked and businessmen, restaurants and traders made brisk profits, as she commended the national body for giving the state hosting rights.
Mrs Suoteigha George, who also doubles as the branch chairman of the association at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa (FMC), thanked members of the association for attending the conference and scientific workshop en masse.
She described AMLSN as the bedrock of the health care industry, as she rated Bayelsa high on the training of members of the association in the tertiary institutions of the state as well as the setting up of the state-own molecular laboratory for timely investigation of diseases.
Highpoint of the event was the delivery of speeches by the former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, and the Bayelsa State governor, Senator Douye Diri, who was represented by his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.
