No Bills for 5 Rivers Reps as Apiafi Leads Sekibo, Mpigi

Five of the 13 federal legislators representing Rivers constituencies at the lower chamber of the National Assembly did not sponsor any bill in two years.

This is according to a midterm analysis of bill sponsorship in the 9th National Assembly by legislature-focused media, OrderPaper.

According to OrderPaperToday’s ‘The Report Card,’ the three senators from Rivers State are not new to the National Assembly, having served in previous assemblies either in the Senate or House of Representatives.

Sen. Thompson Sekibo George, representing Rivers East, has been a serving senator since 2007 and has sponsored 10 bills in the current 9th Senate, one of the bills is the Medical Negligence Compensation Bill 2020.

Sen. Apiafi Jocelyn Betty, a former House of Representatives member, was elected into the Senate for the first time in 2019. She represents Rivers West senatorial district and has sponsored 11 bills, three of which have passed second reading.

Sen. Mpigi Barinada, representing Rivers South East, was also a House of Reps member before his election into the Senate. He has 6 bills to his credit.

How Rivers Senators Stand on Bills

The newbies from Rivers State in the House of Representatives have a mixed scorecard on bills at midterm. Dr. Igwe Chinyere Emmanuel (Port Harcourt II) has 4 bills: Ephraim Nwuzi (Etche/Omuma) has 2 bills: Chisom Promise Dike (Eleme/Oyigbo/Tai) has no bill: Emerengwa Boniface Sunday (Emohua/Ikwerre) has no bill: Dagogo Doctor Farah (Bonny/Degema) has 2 bills: and Solomon Bob (Abua Odual/Ahoada East) has 4 bills. Nnam Obi Prince Uchechuku, a returning legislator and representative of Ahoada West/Ogba Egbema Ndoni: and Awaji-Inombek Abiante Dagomie (Andoni/Opobo Nkoro) have both sponsored 14 bills apiece.

Among the returning legislators is Boma Goodhead, representing Akuku Toru/Asari Toru federal constituency. She is the only female among the legislators in the House from Rivers State and has not sponsored any bill at midterm.

Other returning lawmakers are Dumnamene Robison Dekor (Gokana/Khana) with no bill: Gogo Bright Tamuno (Okrika/Ogu Bolo) also with no bill: and Kenneth Anayo Chikere (Port Harcourt I) with 1 bill.

Opposition mobilizer and ranking leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (POP) caucus in the House, Chinda Kingsley Ogundu (Obio Akpor) has 5 bills to his credit at midterm.
