Ohoror community in Uwheru kingdom, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State was recently thrown into pandemonium and mourning as a young woman (name withheld) in her prime stabbed her husband (name also withheld) to death.
Narrating the ugly incident to our correspondent, one of the community leaders who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “It was a tragedy here yesterday evening. This is not what we have heard here before. We just got the report that one of our women stabbed her own husband to death out of provocation and uncontrolled anger.
“Actually I don’t just know what caused the fight between them. But we were told that the man called his wife on phone when the day was getting dark to come home with the children to prepare soup and do other things in the house. The woman in question is a petty trader. She is a road side seller.
“We heard that on getting home, she questioned her husband why she must call her to do household things for him, adding that her husband was expected to do everything in the home. This now triggered the anger of the man which finally led to a big fight between two of them. Before neighbours and passers-by could come to broker peace, the woman in her anger picked a knife and stabbed her husband. The man died immediately. It’s a terrible situation with the entire community as we speak,” the community leader said.
Also speaking, an eye witness who also refused to disclose her name said, “Though I didn’t know what actually caused the fight between two of them, but I ran to the scene when the woman had already stabbed her husband. It was the noise that we heard that prompted me to move. When I got there, it was a tragedy.
“Then, I began to wonder, how did this incident happen? That a woman will have the guts to stab her own husband? It’s unheard of here. We know at the end of it all, we shall accuse the devil for being responsible for this evil act. What must have entered the woman at that particular time to pick a knife? Something is actually wrong. This woman has born eight children for this man and she is carrying a pregnancy for the man too. A man you have lived with for many years in the same house. The woman is too aggressive. She supposed to maintain that name, woman.
“Well, it has happened. I want to preach to the youths to remain calm and allow the family of the deceased and our community leaders to report the matter to the police station for further investigations. To me, the woman must face the punishment of her crime to serve as deterrent to other women and other people generally,” she said.
It was gathered that, the woman had eight children for her late husband with a pregnancy closed to delivery. As at the time of filing this report, an angry mob from the vicinity carried the corpse of the man and dump it in the sitting room of the woman’s father’s residential house in the community.
All efforts to speak to the chairman of the Ohoror community and the DPO, ‘A’ Division of the Ughelli Police Station proved abortive.
