Sea Pirates Attack Covid-19 Sensitization Officer in Bayelsa

The rising incidence of sea piracy along the Akassa-Brass-Yenagoa route in Bayelsa State is giving commuters cause for concern.

The latest attack took place over the weekend with one health worker returning from a Coronavirus sensitization campaign in Brass Local Government Area injured.

The Akassa-Brass-Nembe-Yenagoa sea routes are often hotbed of pirate activities.

Though there had been a lull for some time, there seems to be a resurgence of the criminal act in recent times.

On Saturday, the men of the underworld were at it again, this time attacking a passenger boat along the Okoroma Creek around 8.50am.

The sea pirates shot sporadically, injuring a passenger, Mr. Enoch Iduate, who had to stay in water for about forty-five minutes before getting help from security operatives while the driver of the boat managed to escape with other travellers.

Mr.  Iduate, who is currently recuperating in one of the hospitals in Yenagoa said he was hit by two bullets, one in his right shoulder and left arm.

He appealed to government to beef up security along the axis.

Some commuters and natives from the affected areas, among them Friday Cyrus and Daniel Ambrose, urged security agencies and government to do more to tackle the challenge of sea piracy.

A retired Police Officer, Mr. Demini Nasisi, said one way to curb the menace was to mop up the illegal arms and position more boats in strategic areas along the routes.

For now the people are hoping that the challenge of sea piracy would be tackled along the Akassa-Brass-Yenagoa water ways and ensure their safety.

When contacted, the security agencies confirmed the incident, stating that while investigations were ongoing, they would continue to do their best to secure the waterways.
