By Amos Okioma, Yenagoa
Bayelsa State governor, Senator Douye Diri’s kinsmen in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of the state on Tuesday rolled out the drums to welcome him home, after his victory at the Supreme Court and subsequent swearing in.
Receiving Governor Diri at his palace in Kaiama, headquarters of Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, Ibenanaowei of Kolokuma kingdom, King Onya Mozi-Agara, described his victory as divine, stressing that, it could only have been the hand of God to have made the victory possible.
In a statement by the head of Press, Government House, Yenagoa, Mr. Ebi Avi, King Agara-Mozi, who also spoke as the chairman of the Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Council of Chiefs said that the chiefs and people of the area were proud of Diri’s achievements and thanked God for the opportunity to see a son of the area become governor of the state in his life time.
He appealed to all aggrieved parties, irrespective of party affiliations to sheath their swords and work with the new governor to build a new Bayelsa.
The royal father also called on Bayelsans to disregard all negative insinuations about the new governor and give him a chance to prove himself as a true son of the state and the Ijaw nation.
At the palace of His Royal Highness, Chief Famous Usikoromogha, the Amananaowei of Sampou, expressed joy over Senator Diri’s elevation to the position of governor.
While praying for him to succeed, Chief Usikoromogha called on the people of the area and Bayelsans to jettison every form of disagreement, arising from the election and embrace peace, love and unity of purpose.
In his remark, Governor Diri said he was in the area to show appreciation to the royal fathers for their relentless prayers, blessings and support before, during and after the elections, adding that he still needs their continuous support and prayers to successfully pilot the affairs of the state to enviable heights.
He assured the royal fathers that he would strive to surpass the performance level of his predecessors by working assiduously to ensure the effective spread of development across the state.
It was the same colourful reception by the people of Sampou community, home town of the governor, when elders, women and youths trooped out to welcome home their illustrious son.
Meanwhile, the Federated Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bayelsa State council, comprising all the national newspapers, television and radio stations, has congratulated the newly sworn-in governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, and his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, on their victory and subsequent swearing in.
This was contained in a press statement signed on behalf of the chapel by its chairman, Julius Osahon, and secretary, Willie Bassey.
According to the statement, “as experienced politicians and distinguished senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, it is our hope that they will pilot the affairs of this great state to the greater heights.
“As the governor said during his inaugural address, Bayelsa needs peace, magnanimity in victory, unity, to eschew bitterness and togetherness, that is only when the state can achieve prosperity as promoted by Senator Diri during his electioneering campaigns, and we know with the pedigrees and antecedents of Diri and that of his workaholic deputy, Ewhrudjakpo, Bayelsans are in a better deal in the next four year.
“We, as the fourth estate of the realm are desirous of working with the new government in publicising its strides and developmental efforts to the outside world.
“It is our fervent hope that the governor, knowing the critical rules of press, will distinguish himself and work closely in harmony with us to foster a greater Bayelsa worthy of emulation.
“Once again, congratulations to the new governor and deputy governor of Bayelsa State,” they said.
