The Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) has said that with its delivery of Domestic Liquefied Petroleum Gas (DLPG) to Stockgap terminal in Port Harcourt, the number of deaths associated with dirty energy sources in Nigeria would significantly reduce.
Making the revelation in Port Harcourt during the delivery of its first 650,000 tonnes of DLPG, the group managing director of NLNG, Tony Attah, said that about 400,000 people, especially women and girls die in Nigeria annually due to issues associated with use of kerosene stoves and firewood.
He said that death from dirty energy sources ranked third among highest killers in Nigeria after malaria and HIV/AIDS, stressing that with the availability of the DLPG in Rivers and Niger Delta at affordable rate, more families would have access to cleaner energy and avoid the risk associated with dirty energy use.
According to him, the new development on the LPG being produced in Rivers State for the Southern region is a great achievement by the company, adding that it would resolve the tedious issues of transporting processed gas to Lagos first before bringing it back to Port Harcourt using trucks.
He said “We are really quite pleased to partner with Stockgap, another credible and solid brand. For us it is a testament of our vision as Nigeria LNG. Basically, we are a global player but also we want to build a better Nigeria. And part of our contribution is bringing energy and cleaner fuel into the country.
“Before now we produce in Bonny, ship it to Lagos and we rely on a truck to pick it from Lagos and drive, sometimes 24 hours to bring same molecule back to Port Harcourt. And for us in Bonny, it is bottled in Port Harcourt and put on the boat and brought back to me to cook and we thought there was something wrong with that.
“Today, we want to encourage Nigerians. We want to encourage people from the Niger Delta, from Rivers State to embrace LPG. LPG is safe, is cleaner, is available, and working with Stockgap, we know definitely it is affordable and I think that will change the narrative of what is more than a hundred thousand people who die annually in Nigeria in inhaling smokes just because they want to put food on the table,” he said.
Mr Attah assured of a continuous partnership with Stockgap, “we will continue to supply whatever quantity they need and that is the commitment NLNG has in encouraging this.”
In his remarks, the Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, commended the management of the Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas Limited and Stockgap for trusting and investing massively in the state, adding that it was a way of sending a message to the society that Rivers State is safe for investors.
He noted that Rivers State is a safe place to invest, assuring that the state government will always provide enabling environment for investors to come in and invest for improvement of the state’s economy and the nation at large.
“Rivers State is the best place for investors to come. There is always return on investment in the state.
“I am happy with this investment. We will reconstruct the road leading to this facility as an encouragement to the investor.
“This facility will create employment and develop the economy of the area. We need to support investors for the good of the society,” he said.
He praised the Nigerian engineers who constructed the facility, adding that time has come for Nigerian engineers to be given the opportunity to showcase their skills for the development of the country.
“Rivers State is a better place to invest. Some of you like the gas but do not want those who produce the gas to benefit. But investment will create a lot of employment for our people.
“The state government will support by constructing the road that leads to the Stockgap so as to avoid incidents of tankers falling down.
“We will continue to develop infrastructure in the state to grow the state’s economy and attract more investors to the state.
“I thank the host community for not creating insecurity for the project. The project will create more employment for Rumuolumeni youths.
“I must commend the chairman of Stockgap and NLNG for what they have done for Rivers State, by investing massively here,” he said.
