Bayelsa PDP v Landlord: Court Set for Judgement in N105m Rent Arrears Suit

By David Owei, Yenagoa

A motion for judgement has been filled by the legal counsel to Hon. Chubby Walson, landlord to the Bayelsa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in a suit against the party over a one hundred and five million naira (N105, 000, 000) rent arrears.

Filling the motion, Barr Kelvin E. Ejelonu Esq, said the amount owed its client was an outstanding arrears of about 6 years, adding that the party only paid due rent from 1st August 2008 to 31st July 2010, and some money thereafter.

According to him, a legal action was instituted against PDP since March 27th 2019 for failing to meet up their rent since it was due till date.

Barr Ejelonu said series of demand letters had been written to the party on the 5th of September 2016, 16th October 2018, 25th January 2019, and February 20th 2019, but the party had not responded to any.

“No response by the party made to the landlord, Hon. Chubby Walson who instituted a legal action against the party in Suit No: YHC/50/2019 seeking the judgement of the court to compel PDP to pay up it arrears and the interest thereon of which since the matter was filed, PDP has refused to appear in court or send representative,” he said.

He said PDP action shows that they don’t have a defense and urge the party to pay up its rent since it had “accumulated so much money from their aspirants in the last governorship primaries of the party.”

Barr Ejelonu further urged PDP to follow up its request to settle the matter out of court to avoid embarrassment that might arise as the matter is coming up on 23rd October 2019 for motion for judgement.
