NDMPN Ends Flood Awareness Campaign in Rivers

A non-governmental organization, the Niger Delta Media Practitioners of Nigeria (NDMPN), has ended a two-day awareness campaign on the dangers associated with flood.

National coordinator of the Niger Delta Media Practitioners of Nigeria (NDMPN), Dr. Gilbert Amadi, explained that the event was to drew the attention of flood-prone communities on the dangers associated with the natural disaster and the need for people living in low density areas to take precautions and adhere to early warning signs.

He thanked the people of Mbiama community and adjourning villages who turned out in their numbers to participate in the program, which according to him had afforded them the opportunity to respond whenever they witness such signs.

The NDMPN boss noted that the campaign was made possible by their grand patron, the managing director and chief executive officer of Goddie Chemicals International Limited, Engr. Godwin Ettim, and reassured the people of a post-flood visit.

Also speaking, the Community Development Committee (CDC) chairman of Mbiama community, Mr. Francis Asiri Owam, thanked the organizers of the event for the choice of their community for the campaign, adding that a similar program was held by the Ahuada West local council through its flood committee.

He appealed to governments at all levels not to wait till when the flood engulfs the community before providing them with relief materials.

Speaking on the topic ‘Flood is Dangerous to our Health,’ the guest speaker, Dr. Samuel Briggs, recalled how flood had destroyed so many homes and properties, adding that the choice of Ahuada West Local Government Area for the crusade was the right decision following the experiences of the 2012 and and 2022 flood.

He appealed to residents whose houses had been submerged during flooding period to always prepare alternative arrangements in case of any eventuality.

The NDMPN flood campaign awareness, which was held at Community Primary School Mbiama, also witnessed speeches from the representatives of the LGA flood committee, women, youths among others.
