Ignatius Ajuru: ‘Fastest Growing Varsity’ Admits 5,185, Partners Overseas Institutions

Nigeria’s ‘fastest growing university south of the Niger,’ Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, has offered admission to five thousand, one hundred and eight five (5,185) students into various programmes of study for the 2018/2019 academic session.

This number forms part of the fourteen thousand, two hundred and two (14,202) candidates that initially applied to the university for admission.

Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Ozo-Mekuri Ndimele, delivering an address at the university’s matriculation ceremony on Saturday May 4, 2019, said that with expansion in NUC – accredited degrees and programmes, in infrastructure and partnership with overseas universities on top-up degree programmes, the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education is unarguably the “fastest growing university south of the Niger.”

He said the institution had “entered into partnerships with some overseas universities, particularly in the United Kingdom (UK), United States of America (USA), Turkey and Ukraine to run top-up degree programmes whereby we will admit students to study here for two or three years and the reminder of their programme in an overseas university.

“The degree will be awarded by the overseas universities. Partnerships with the University of London and VN Karazin in Ukraine have progressed to advance stages, and we hope to commence admission in the coming academic session,” he said.

Prof Ndimele noted that “all 47 undergraduate programmes offered by the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education have full accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC). The university runs postgraduate programmes in some core areas of our mandate. It is no gain-saying that we have one of the most efficiently-run postgraduate schools in Nigeria. The graduate classrooms are fully air-conditioned with smart boards and the state-of-the-art furniture. Our students graduate in record time.

“Since my tenure as vice chancellor, we have built 28 new classrooms: 10 at the new Education building, 10 at the new postgraduate classrooms, 6 at the new undergraduate lecture halls, 6 at the auditorium extension, and 2 large halls at the ICTC. Work is ongoing at the university mini – theatre for the Department of Theatre & Film Studies.

“We are planning to build more classrooms to take care of the recent large influx of students into our university. We have introduced a new system whereby some of our examinations are implemented through Computer-based Test (CBT). We advise our students to be computer (keyboard) literate to be able to carry out this exercise,” he said.

Prof Ndimele also added that the school had opened a new exit road to ease traffic congestion on its main campus. “A circular road around the Nyesom Ezenwo Wike Centre of Excellence is under construction. The postgraduate hall of residence comprising 160 bed spaces with in-situ toilets will be commissioned by the end of this month. Work on the Salvation Female Hostel donated by Pastor David Ibieyomie will start soon. Our goal is to make our students comfortable,” he said.

He however warned students that the school administration “will resist any attempt by any student to destabilize the peace that we are enjoying here. Your primary assignment is to study, graduate in record time and to make your parents proud. As students, you are to respect and adhere strictly to the rules and guidelines governing this institution. You must earn the degree that would eventually be awarded to you if you conduct yourself within the prescribed guidelines.”

Our reporter gathered that 9 Year-One students from the university’s host communities were awarded scholarship to study in the university, bringing the total number of students from such communities offered scholarship to 18. Meanwhile plans has been concluded by the university management to award scholarship to a number of indigent students studying at the university.
